Search Tips
Quick Search and General Search Tips
To search articles on AnthroSource, enter words that describe the articles you're looking for in the search box found at the top of each page and click on the Search button.
If you search from a publication page, such as a table of contents or abstract page, you'll be given the additional option of searching within "this issue," "this journal," or "all journals."
Clicking the Search button will take you to a search results page that lists matching articles in order from most to least relevant.
Capitalization
AnthroSearch is not case sensitive. For example, searches for anthropology, Anthropology, and AnThRoPoLoGy will all return the same results.
Automatic exclusion of common words
AnthroSearch automatically excludes common words such as "the," "and," and "a" (commonly referred to as "stop words") because they do not improve your search.
Stemming
When appropriate, AnthroSearch will search not only for your words, but also for words that are similar to some or all of those words. For example, searches for anthropology will also return results that include anthropologist, anthropological, etc.
Stemming is not applied to phrase searches.
Phrase searches
To search for articles containing a particular phrase, put quotation marks around the phrase. For example, enter "American Anthropologist" to locate articles containing the exact phrase.
Using Advanced Search
The Advanced Search interface allows you to quickly locate articles that match specific criteria. Use the text boxes to enter words that describe exactly what you're looking for, and then use the remaining parameters to define the scope of your search.
Find articles with all of the words
Your search results will display only those articles that contain all of the words entered into this text box, regardless of the order in which they were entered.
Find articles with the exact phrase
Your search results will display only those articles that contain the exact words, in order, entered into this text box. This is equivalent to searching for a "quoted phrase."
Find articles with at least one of the words
Your search results will display only those articles that contain at least one of the words entered into this text box.
Find articles with none of the words
Use this text box in conjunction with one or more of the above to eliminate articles containing certain words from your search.
Location
By default, AnthroSearch will find articles where your words appear anywhere in the article. Use this parameter to restrict your search to article titles or abstracts.

Use this parameter to restrict your search to articles related to a particular author. To search for an author, enter all or part of the author's name into this text box.

By default, AnthroSearch will find articles from all publications. Use this parameter to restrict your search to articles from a particular publication.
Date
Use this parameter to restrict your search to articles published within a particular date range.
Using Search Results
The search results page provides access to articles as well as methods to refine your results.
Ordering results
By default, search results are ordered by relevancy to your search parameters. Click the links at the top of the page to toggle between ordering by relevancy and by publication date.
Narrowing results by publication, or author
Along the right-hand side of your search results are two lists of links.
The first list displays the publications in which the resulting articles appear. The number of articles that appear in each publication is displayed in parentheses. Clicking one of these links will restrict your results to only articles that appear in that publication.
The second list displays the authors, who wrote the resulting articles. Clicking one of these links will restrict your results to only articles that were written by that author.
